Chlorosulfonated polyethylene rubber (CSM), commercially recognized under trade names such as Hypalon®, is a specialty elastomer distinguished by its outstanding resistance to ozone, ultraviolet (UV) radiation, and atmospheric aging. It demonstrates excellent chemical stability in the presence of strong oxidizing acids, including chromic, nitric, sulfuric, and phosphoric acids, as well as alkaline substances like chlo rine dioxide and hy drogen peroxide. This broad-spectrum chemical resistance makes CSM particularly suitable for applications in chemical processing environments, especially where contact with corrosive agents is routine.
 
CSM exhibits inherent flame-retardant properties and is classified as a self-extinguishing material, making it ideal for applications with stringent fire safety requirements. It also offers excellent resistance to abrasion, oxygen, and weathering, which further enhances its suitability for harsh operating environments such as those found in mining and heavy industrial operations.
 
Additional characteristics include low gas permeability, moderate resistance to oils and fats, and good compression set resistance. When compared to chloroprene rubber (CR), CSM delivers superior UV and ozone resistance, making it the preferred choice for outdoor and high-exposure applications.
 
Typical end uses for CSM sheeting and molded parts include components for mining equipment, public transportation systems, chemical containment, and protective linings in environments demanding high levels of fire and chemical resistance.
