Glycerin Monostearate, also known as GMS, originates from the chemical reaction between glycerol and stearic acid. This waxy, white substance serves a variety of roles—acting as an emulsifier, stabilizer, and lubricant—in diverse applications, including the food and pharmaceuticaI industries. In the context of polymers and plastics, GMS serves as a critical component that provides a plethora of benefits such as enhanced mechanical properties, improved processability, and added aesthetics.

It is mainly used in films and moldings made of PE/PP/PVC. It gives lubricating effect during moulding or extrusion contributing to a smooth, shiny surface on the product produced. It is also used as an antistatic agent to reduce the electrical resistance on the surface of films and molded products. It also gives uniform cell size distribution in expanded polyethylene (EPE) foams. as lubricant and anti-static and anti atomization agent in plastic.

GMS can be used to process foods such as bread, cakes, ice cream, chocolate, margarine, and beverages. GMS helps oils and water in food to mix well, such as in ice cream, preventing fat separation and creating a smoother texture. When added to bread and cakes, GMS extends the soft texture and shelf life, preventing them from drying out or hardening quickly, and slowing down the ageing process. When making chocolate, it prevents sugar crystallisation and oil separation, resulting in a smoother final product.

It is primarily used in products such as face creams, shampoos, body lotions, and lipsticks.

GMS ensures that the oily and water-based components in skincare products mix evenly and do not separate; it makes the cream smoother to apply when used; When added to creams, GMS forms a protective layer on the skin, helping to lock in moisture. Using shampoo with GMS leaves hair looking more lustrous after washing.

In the plastic industry, GMS is commonly used in food packaging films, agricultural greenhouse films, PVC pipes, and foam plastics (such as pearl cotton).

Adding GMS to agricultural greenhouse films prevents fogging and water droplets, ensuring more uniform sunlight exposure and better supporting crop growth. In foam plastics like fruit nets, it helps distribute bubbles evenly and reduces shrinkage and deformation.
