Product Description

Product Overview

CPE is chlorinated polyethylene polymers produced by combining chlorine and polyethylene in an aqueous slurry. Its saturated, linear high molecular structure enables CPE with many superior physical and chemical performances. As a high-performance additive, it enhances PVC applications by improving impact resistance, weather durability, and plasticizer retention in flexible films. Its adaptable properties make it ideal for cable insulation, rubber elastomers, and flame-retardant polyolefin compounds, while also serving as a reliable material for protective wire jacketing. CPE's multifunctional capabilities support diverse industrial solutions, offering manufacturers a practical balance of performance and process efficiency.

Uses

I. Characteristics of CPE as an Impact Modifier

  1. Core Functions

    • Enhances material toughness (impact resistance), especially for polar polymers like rigid PVC and ABS.

    • Improves processing fluidity and reduces melt viscosity.

    • Provides auxiliary benefits such as plasticization, flame retardancy, and weather resistance (higher chlorine content in certain grades enhances flame retardancy).

  2. Applications

    • PVC pipes/profiles (e.g., doors, windows, railings)

    • Wire and cable sheathing

    • Injection-molded/extruded products (e.g., automotive parts, industrial components)

    • Blending with ABS, PE, and other polymers

II. CPE Selection Guidelines

  1. Chlorine Content

    • 36-40% chlorine: Optimal for impact modification (e.g., CPE 135A/B), suitable for rigid PVC.

    • >40% chlorine: Higher flame retardancy but reduced toughness; balance based on formulation requirements.

  2. Crystallinity and Molecular Weight

    • Low-crystallinity CPE (e.g., 135A) ensures better dispersion and impact performance.

    • Moderate molecular weight (Mooney viscosity ML(1+4) 125°C: 50-80) balances processability and toughening effects.

III. Typical Formulation Design

1. Rigid PVC Products (Pipes/Profiles)

Component Ratio (phr) Function
PVC resin 100 Base material
CPE 5-12 Impact modifier (8-10 phr recommended)
Thermal stabilizer 3-5 Calcium-zinc/lead-based
Lubricant 1-2 Internal/external lubricant blendFiller
Filler 5-20 Calcium carbonate (cost control)
Processing aid 1-2 ACR-type (improves melt strength)

Note: Combining CPE with ACR enhances impact resistance and surface finish.

2. ABS/CPE Blends

  • CPE dosage: 10-20%, significantly improves low-temperature impact resistance of ABS.

  • Add compatibilizers (e.g., SBS) to enhance interfacial bonding.

IV. Key Processing Parameters

  1. Mixing Process

    • High-speed mixer: Add PVC and stabilizer first, then CPE at 80°C, followed by lubricants and fillers to avoid premature agglomeration.

    • Mixing temperature: 110-120°C (avoid localized overheating to prevent CPE degradation).

  2. Extrusion/Injection Molding

    • Extrusion temperature: 160-185°C (adjust based on equipment); excessive temperatures may degrade CPE.

    • Screw speed: Medium-low (prevent shear-induced overheating).

    • Mold cooling: Uniform cooling minimizes internal stress and improves toughness.

V. Common Issues and Solutions

Issue Possible Cause Solution
Insufficient impact resistance Low CPE dosage/poor dispersion Increase CPE to 10-12 phr; optimize mixing
Rough surface Inadequate lubrication or poor CPE compatibility Adjust lubricants; add ACR
Decomposition bubbles Excessive processing temperature Reduce temperature to <180°C; check stabilizer
Reduced mechanical strength Excess CPE or high chlorine content Reduce CPE; use 36% Cl grades

VI. Precautions

  1. Storage

    • Store CPE in a cool, dry, and sealed environment (avoid moisture absorption).

    • Shelf life: 1 year; test chlorine content if expired.

  2. Safety

    • Avoid processing temperatures >200°C to prevent HCl gas release.

    • Ensure pH compatibility when using calcium carbonate fillers (avoid acidic fillers).

  3. Eco-friendly Alternatives

    • For halogen-free flame retardancy, combine with MBS or acrylate-based impact modifiers.

VII. Performance Testing Recommendations

  1. Key Tests

    • Notched impact strength

    • Melt flow rate

    • Thermal stability

  2. Long-term Performance Validation

    • UV aging test (weather resistance)

    • Low-temperature brittleness test (-10°C to -20°C)

Product Description
