Chlorosulfonated polyethylene (CSM) is a synthetic rubber derived from polyethylene. It combines the advantageous properties of Neoprene (Polychloroprene) with additional enhancements, offering superior performance. CSM rubber is suitable for continuous use at temperatures up to approximately 130°C. It is particularly well-known for its excellent resistance to weathering, UV radiation, ozone, and a wide range of chemicals.
Due to these properties, CSM is widely used in industrial and automotive applications where high performance and durability under extreme environmental conditions are essential. Common products made with CSM rubber include rubber linings, hoses, valve seals, gaskets, and more.

Chlorosulfonated Polyethylene (CSM) exhibits outstanding physical and chemical properties. Its ozone aging resistance significantly surpasses that of natural rubber, withstanding over 500 hours at 50 pphm ozone concentration without cracking. Its UV resistance is also remarkable, retaining more than 85% of tensile strength after 3,000 hours of accelerated QUV aging.
In terms of chemical resistance, CSM demonstrates long-term durability against strong acids (e.g., 50% sulfuric acid), strong alkalis (e.g., 40% sodium hydr oxide), oils (ASTM #1 standard oils), and oxidizing agents (e.g., 30% hydrogen pero xide). Its mechanical properties are equally impressive: tear strength exceeds 25 kN/m, DIN abrasion is less than 100 mm³, and its abrasion resistance is 60% higher than that of Nitrile Rubber (NBR).

CSM plays a vital role in the automotive industry. Thanks to its heat resistance and fuel permeability resistance, it is an ideal material for fuel delivery hoses and turbocharger cooling hoses. For instance, in ethanol gaso line permeability tests, CSM hoses exhibit a permeability rate of less than 0.5 g/m²·24h.
In new energy vehicles, CSM is used in battery cooling lines, meeting UL94 V-0 flame retardancy standards while enduring extreme temperature cycles from -40°C to 150°C. Additionally, CSM components like brake system seals and suspension hydraulic pipes demonstrate excellent resistance to pulse fatigue, enduring over 500,000 pressure cycles.
CSM is also widely used in anti-corrosion engineering. Heavy-duty anti-corrosion coatings made from CSM are applied in chemical equipment, offshore platforms, and oil pipelines, offering salt spray resistance of over 1,000 hours and maintaining integrity through thermal cycling from -50°C to 120°C.
For example, a CSM protective coating on an offshore oil platform showed no significant corrosion after 10 years of seawater exposure. CSM can also be combined with epoxy resins to create a flexible, adhesive multilayer anti-corrosion system, significantly extending equipment lifespan.
